  1. 1. Interesting that the whole competition is succumbing to concerns of ONE nations beliefs.
    2. Whats the point of the bikini contest? Feels like a way to sexualize these woman. Judge them for the hot and sexy bodies compared to their beautiful minds.
2.5 Reading some of the comments it seems like the guys are 100% against for various reasons but the vast majority purely just want to see hot women in bikinis.
    3. The fact that this is making headlines and causing such a ruckus shows how we are as an overall community. Men will always find a way to put women in their places and keeping them as their eye candies.

  2. I really enjoyed this article.
I found it very respectable and important, as it summons the topic of traditions and culture.
One must not give in on what the media wants. Bikinis are great, but they're not necessary for a pageant contest or whatever it maybe.
Like SpuckUnites said, it's a male thing, not a female thing. Woman are just trying to reach that self-esteem that the society of men desire. It's nothing more than a twisted game. Woman should be idealized in every way, not just on appearance and sexuality.

  3. First of all I don't get these competition at all I think that these beauty pageants are out dated and I have no interest in them what so ever. I think that today there are so many other outlets to showcase whatever talent you have. The bikini part is ridiculous but that is just as sexual as the rest of the pageant. All that make up and the dresses it is all things that sexualize women a lot. Nothing about it is natural.
I feel that since Indonesia already agreed to host i, it's hard to change the tradition of the pageant now. They should have just said no to have it all together. There are more pressing matter that people should be worried about and this concludes my rant.

  4. While I think these pageants are pretty ridiculous--it's even more ridiculous to "ban" girls from wearing bikinis. Granted, bikinis are most likely a male invention to promote scantily clad women, but seriously. If women want to show off their bodies, who are we to stop them? It's socially appropriate for men to walk around without shirts, so why are women excluded from the same courtesy?

  5. this is a chance for us to examine our own judgements. If anyone has either lost a bunch of weight, gained a bunch of weight, then lost it again - ask yourself: when did you "show off" more? when did you feel better about yourself? when were you more healthy? was your behavior always the same as your weight varied? is culture to blame for the variation - or did you make a choice for which you are responsible? Now, apply that to this situation for a more robust analysis.

  6. The idea of wearing sarongs for a beauty competition is interesting because it covers up the body. Why should women feel good about themselves because of how men view how pretty they were? Women's value shouldn't be based on their looks. Unfortunately, that's how our world has shaped us to think. Did you know that women has more fatty tissues than men? It is a genetic thing. Women are meant to be big because we were meant to bear children during the prehistoric days. The bigger, the better. Now, media defines hot women to be a size 2.

Despite the Muslim culture, one should still never compare whose culture is better or criticize someone else's culture. I did not appreciate them calling Riyo Mori a symbol of pornography and adultery because that is making a false statement and could be a possible reason for unnecessary conflict. As much as one is entitled to their own opinions, people should learn how to keep offensive comments to themselves instead of claiming to be self-righteous.
