Everybody Rides The Carousel (1976)

I found a cute short that seems to cover everything we've talked about in class so far- body language, the relationship between men and women, and emotion.

Based on the writings of psychoanalyst Erik Erikson, Everybody Rides the Carousel invites the viewer along on eight rides through the different stages of life. It reflects the inner feelings and conflicting emotions experienced during each stage of personality development.

Objective - Goal

Remember to come to class with a clear goal - a goal you could in theory reach in the next two years.  It could be your goal or the goal of an important character you are writing.

The Airpot and Emotions

When I was at the airport waiting to pick up my girlfriend I noticed a few things that I thought I'd share...

People are always in a hurry. (maybe we should slow down every once in awhile.)
Loud noises, smell of metal and gas.
Lots of Emotions- They comes in all forms.
Saw a Dad with his grown son. They hugged as if the son was five.
Saw a cabbie, pissed off and laying on his horn.
Saw a Mom with her four wild kids. I don't know how she did it but she got them from point A to B successfully.
Saw a guy in a suit running full sprint to the gate. (and of course he was on his cell)
And of course I saw a bunch of couples. Some old, some young. Some didn't look happy while others were oozing with passion.

For some reason, I didn't expect the airport to be a place filled with such wide ranging emotions.

And speaking of emotions...then I saw my girl. A smile, a hug and a kiss.

Emotions come from where? I'm smart enough to say I don't know. But go to the airport and you'll definitely see it.

Thursday

I am switching around two weeks (in case you are following the syllabus).
We are tackling the topic EMOTION this week Thursday - and it will be in preparation for an exercise we will do all together next week Thursday.
You do not have to prepare for the emotion presentation, but it is important to attend these 2 weeks to prepare for the paper that is due November 17.  If you are doing a film, this will not be a traditional paper but, rather, a treatment.
Consider the answer to this question:  Where do emotions come from?
This switch gives you all a better chance (no excuse) to obtain the book Influence.  See syllabus - and there are two copies on reserve in the Library.  Start reading it now!
Your Nov 17th paper may be on Body Language, Gender, or Emotion - and more later on that.

Nit Picking Fights with Flies.

Maybe I'm whispering in your ear a secret. I still feel the wind through my brows, my head, my toes- if I'm not wearing shoes of course. Of course! How would I feel the wind through my toes, if I'm not wearing shoes of course! Or the hat on my head, or the mask on my face. How could I feel the wind?

I'll agree it's buzz, but maybe it's a secret. Maybe the whispering buzz can still ride with the wind I do not feel. The wind I do not feel. The hat on my head, the mask on my face, the shoes of course! Maybe I can still taste the rain the wind pours.

But first for buzz, second for taste, the wind will pour another day. Listen to me if you ride the rain. I'll taste you another day. Pour my secrets through the drumming hums, every time you hit the grum.

The voice will hear through the empty shallows we will not see, but we can believe. The voice will drum the buzz, drown secrets to dust. Level mountains to must. Show me the buzz and I will believe. But level with me if you want my ears. Tell me the truth and then I will hear.

Otherwise you may also just be another buzz, and another tear.

The Miner Movie

Someone could write a movie about what the miners did and what amazing social engineering they are now capable of:  putting the group first, having faith, dealing with fears, ingenuity - what a tale they have to tell.   Goodness knows what they will do - but the movie could either tell that or tell what they could do.  So far, this is a real good "Hollywood ending."    May it continue to be so!

ASSIGNMENT

I am surprised no one wrote to ask questions about the assignment.
bring with you the papers I handed out last week on BL (Body Language)

What a Day!!!

so this morning started off rather early I woke up at 7:00 took a shower then left to go to the DMV because I got a FiX IT Ticket for expired registration 2 days ago. I stopped at 7/11 to get this wicked sour apple flavored slurpee however it wasnt working the light was blinking. I got to the dmv and waited about 90 mins. It was 90 minutes in hell. which got followed by a sequel.
As I waited I forgot my headphones and was pretty much bored to death then this girl walks right in front of me a very large girl wearing a tight white semi-see through shirt that was cut off in the belly button with her fat just hanging out. Sorry if your offended but that's just gross. Then the guy next to me whom was obviously not wearing deodorant totally ripped one and I moved my seat. Might I also add the building had like no A/C and was hot as balls! There were no empty seats and people standing as I was only 2 numbers away from being called I had a feeling of disgust at the people and the surrounding I was in. My number was called...
So finally I can get away from these Bad BO really gross farting too tight/too short shirt people. Wrong... I thought Car registration would be like $50 but I brought $75 just in case. In california they have this ridiculous tax...well they have many but let's add this one. Keep in mind that all the state of cali does when you renew your registration is give you 1 sheet of paper and tiny sticker. It was $271! Because my car was a mustang not a fucking pinto. What the fuck is that shit!!! It shouldn't matter it should be a flat rate. So I had to cal my dad and he had to go put money in my account. Oh yeah and I needed cash. So off to the bank. I noticed the wait time is almost 2 hours. So I take a new number before I leave cause I knew it wouldn't be called. I ran over to the bank then to 7/11 to get a wicked apple slurpee light was still blinking. Damn.
So I get back and there are no available seats just a milliion people standing around. I had to use the bathroom which was graffitti filled and the previous person didn't was the terd don the toilet. thank god I only hate to pee. FYI I don't believe in god.
So I'm standing next to this really fat lady in a wheelchair trying to figure out her life story if she perhaps ate herself to this way? She smelled horrible so I moved to the front where no one really one but I could still hear if my number was called. I still thought about her life story. Then this really slutty dressed like 17 year old got into an argument with the ticket guy claiming she had an appointment and didn't have to wait her name wasnt in the database akwardly amusing it went on for like 3 mintues. So I looked around and just felt digusted by the amount of fat people whom most of which I can personally aware you of there deoderant usage. I felt gross. My number was called, paid my fee, and got the hell outta there. Maybe it was a normal experience to others but I felt so gross probably what you'd feel like trapped in the wilderness without a shower. On my way home I stopped at 7/11 the slushee machine was still blinking! I rushed home and took a 30 minute shower....sorry enviornment.
If that offended you in anyway.....Whoops!
So I get home and my time warner cable is screwing up so I watch The girl Next Door on blu ray twice while I facebook. I had to pick up my friend danielle at the airport. I brought her home then went to 7/11 and saw the light wasn't blinking on the wicked apple slushee! I was so excited I pulled the knob too fast and it exploded all over me. Theres not many things you want exploded on you but wicked apple slushee is the rare exception. I filled the cup up and walked to the register. There some crazy old lady had a 7/11 grocery bag full of ice and was pouring it into an empty mega gulp cup. What the fuck? You know there is an ice machine? Then opened a milk carton and poured it in the cup while saying mmmmmm? Okay?

Then I came home and dancing with the stars didnt tape cause cable is glitching I thought about bitching to time warner but after 2 years and it being the first time I let it go. So I'm watching the girl next door again debating blogging...

BL ( body language )

  • Rahm Emmanuel stands beside Obama with his hands on his hips:  territory (he's claiming new territory) . . . then puts hands at side
  • when new guy is introduced, Rahm puts one hand over his mouth.
  • new guy has hands clasped loosely, covering up, but loosely - and he sways and rocks quite a bit
  • Rahm takes the stand . . .  wow ... teary ...  after jokes about the Chicago Bears, now Obama folds his arms to listen.  He's moved by Rahm's praise, head down.  Rahm is crying . . . holding it together ... closing lips, pursing, to keep in the emotion.

Paper & Film assignments: BL, Gender, Influence

Mid term paper or Mid term film "treatment" due Nov 4. details will be on portal.
Topic: body language (BL) or gender & BL - as used in a film (film you see or film you plan to create).  You may go deep into the film & topic or broad and shallow across the film & topic.
The Final paper or completed film due on final day, Dec. 9.  The Final will cover Influence - the 3rd theme of the class.   Again, you may go broad and shallow or deep into the movie and theme.  The way you approach influence is best informed by your knowledge of BL and Gender.
THEMES:  If you wish to use a different theme, e.g., fears a la Otto Rank or community support to live to be 100, the power plays or social relations you observe in our class itself - or some other theme we touch upon, just ask.
MOVIES:  So far the movies in play are "No Country ..."  "The Professional" ... "Rules of Attraction ..."  and I'll list some more on the portal.  You may suggest a film to me at any time, for I just want to be sure I have seen it recently.

Whoa! here's some dialog

from real life New York  some dialog and some acting too - what if this were in a NY gangster movie?
