Missed video - opportunity

If you miss a video day, you miss a quiz.  Since you are allowed two absences, here is a way to make up:  the video is on reserve in the library.  Watch an episode there in the viewing room.
It is called "CIVILIZATION" - see episode title on the syllabus.  Type up a double spaced paper of no more than 500 words (at least 3 paragraphs to organize your thoughts) to summarize the episode.  You can earn a C or a B rather than an F.
If you are unhappy with your grade on the quiz, you may do the same and potentially increase your quiz score.

Here's that quote

"All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new formed ones become antiquated before they can ossigy.  All that is solid melts into air, all this is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face w/ sober senses his real conditions of life, an his relations with his kind."  Comm Manifesto

The Honor Belt: Corporatization of Family

1.     Descent is traced through males
2.     Clear preference for birth of sons over daughters
3.      Growing up, boys enjoy considerably greater freedom and are groomed to assume a dominant role in the family.  As girls grow up, their worlds contract; they gradually find themselves more and more segregated from boys
4.      Girls receive less schooling.
5.     Girls typically required to wear loose clothing, conceal their hair--may be required to wear a veil
6.     Woman’s sexuality is not her own but belongs to her family.  If suspected of having sex before marriage, may be forced to undergo a virginity examination
7.     Families marry off daughters at a young age, especially in under developed rural areas.  E.g., Turkey, 16% of women in the 1990s married before 15, the legal age for marriage
8.     On marrying, woman usually goes to her husband’s home, subject to the authority of her husband and her mother-in-law
9.      Outside the home,  public world of work, politics, law, & religion: male dominated
10.   Families are clan-like, exhibiting temporal continuity stretching backwards and forwards in time.  The family has a history and, its members hope, a future.  A married couple does not establish its own separate family but, rather, continues and extends the family
11.    Multi-generational and extended:  a man and his brothers and their sons and wives and children and perhaps grandchildren may live under one roof – or close
12.    Share common property:  land and animals owned by the family rather than by individual members
13.   Centralize decision making:  typically in the hands of older members, esp men
14.   Often practice endogamous marriage:  patrilateral cousin marriage (a son marrying his father’s brother’s daughter) is preferred, sometimes modal, through M.E.  Cousin marriage keeps property within the family as wealth is transferred on marriage goes to kin rather than non-kin.
15.   Parents often choose the marriage partners of their offspring.
16.   Honor killing (killing a woman if she engages in sex, particularly outside the religion) is the family’s social control but, according to the West, is itself criminal.
17.   The family acts as a unit towards the world.

Film Lists

Let's use this post to suggest films that fit the categories:  jobs, patriarchal or break-the-mold, family, hot sex, sex as topic, violence, age and sex, LGBTQ, Weddings, Ethnic Differences, Single Parenting.

I saw one this weekend that is great for Ethnic distinctions and gender relations:  Tarantino's "Jackie Brown."  Wow, what a film!

what do we do with our observations?

Learning about behavior patterns that tend to attach to a particular sex or  gender (by nature or by culture) can help to free us. We might have been thinking (and acting) like our friend or partner *is* a certain way, but when we realize that it is characteristic of an entire sex or gender, it has the potential to free us.  We can let go of a notion that our friend or partner "should" be a certain way.   For example, if a woman thinks "her man" does not notice details, it may help for her to realize that many men tend to be busy with goal-based focus, not detail.  Likewise, if a man thinks "his woman" always wants to talk and seems too dependent, it may help for him to realize that this is the way women behave to feel closeness.

8 STAGES of any relationship of any life

  1. trust - we need it to explore...if we have it not, we mistrust & thus cannot explore
  2. independence, autonomy - we need to find it in order 2 find freedom ... if we do not, we have shame
  3. initiative - we need to learn to take it ... and if we do not, we have guilt
  4. industry - if we do it, we avoid a feeling of inferiority
  5. identity - if we do not land on one, we become confused; everyone else seems to have one
  6. affiliation and love - adult life:  we seek those we love and work we love
  7. generativity - if we have passed thru all  earlier stages, we get to the point where we wish to give back
  8. integrity - we feel it if we have been able to do all the above; otherwise, despair.

Belief and reciprocity in Book of Eli

I just watched The Book of Eli by the Hughes brothers. Very creative and beautifully shot film, I really enjoyed it. There are great examples of the power in belief systems, and the positive and negative reciprocity of actions. I recommend it to those who have not seen it.

6 points of today's psychology in the US

  • Foundation:  uncertainty?  science is truth, truth is science (not-magic)?  i-can-do-anything?  entitlements? small world?  digital?  all-control-all-the-time?  vulnerability through strength of electronic world?
  • Self:  self-ISH? lonely-isolated? not gender based?  sexually ambiguous? freer? on a side because all if bifurcated? New Age'd and responsible for "happiness"?  Metro-sexuals?  secular?  believers?  drugs as solutions?
  • Network:  NO networks? must be a team player? disposable relationships? men-women "equal"?
  • Soc Sys:  locked up?  poor & rich US within poor & rich globe?  bureaucracy rules?  newly open to diverse groups?  digital?
  • Change:   terror, global resources (water-food shortages), upswing of religious fervor, conflict reality, smallness of world, outer space-inner space discoveries, speed of charity, empathic world view growth
"HOLLYWOOD"

Be smart - read the assignment

The book is on reserve in Library.   Be ready to speak on 3 of these 10.  We go over prior to watching movie Thurs.  They are all good for script-writing - see esp #2 6 9 - but all are useful.   Be prepared to say what they ARE, some examples from the book, and some of your own examples.

  6. reciprocity (good for a script)
  7. "social proof"
  8. lowball
  9. commitment and consistency - see image on page 104 (good for a script!)

Can you pick the film about which you will write

bunch more in the comments

Ad Hominem

Another way to put Henry's point is that the discussion was all "ad hominem" rather than about issues.  Ad hominem means "to the man" "to the person" - comments made about a person's characteristics rather than comments made about an issue.  What kind of movies one likes or dislikes has nothing to do with the soundness of an argument or utility of a point of view.
